Shan Bronze Buddha statue – Shan States, Myanmar / Burma
A fine Shan bronze Buddha from the Shan States of Myanmar, measuring approximately 30 cm in height from the late 19th century
The Buddha is seated in the bhūmisparśa mudrā, with the right hand touching the ground in the traditional gesture of enlightenment, while the left hand rests in the lap. He is presented on an impressive high, stepped throne, giving the sculpture a strong vertical presence.
The figure displays several characteristic features of Shan Buddhist sculpture, including the elegant almond-shaped eyes, serene expression and particularly high flame-like finial rising above the head. The facial features are finely rendered, with a calm and contemplative expression.
One of the most attractive details is the fine incised carving of the monastic robe. The folds and borders of the garment are carefully articulated, adding considerable delicacy to the otherwise powerful form of the sculpture.
The surface retains extensive traces of the original gilt and lacquer decoration, with areas of wear and loss revealing the darker bronze beneath. These losses are consistent with the age and history of the sculpture and give the surface an attractive, naturally aged appearance.
The Buddha is in good overall condition, with some losses to the lacquer and gilding as visible in the photographs. The sculpture retains its original character, fine details and strong presence.
