A superb bronze figure of the Buddha seated in virasana, displaying the bhumisparsha mudra—the earth-touching gesture that marks his triumph over Mara and attainment of enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree. The right hand reaches downward with elongated fingers touching the lotus throne, while the left hand rests in dhyana mudra upon the lap in deep meditation.

This elegant example embodies the refined aesthetic of the Lan Xang Kingdom, the historic Lao empire that flourished along the Mekong River. The Buddha's serene face bears the classic Lao ideal: downcast eyes beneath gently arched brows, a subtle meditative smile, and a broad oval face framed by pendulous earlobes. The tightly curled hair rises to a tall ushnisha surmounted by a distinctive flame-shaped finial (ketumala).

He is clad in a diaphanous sanghati robe that drapes over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and muscular torso bare. The garment clings closely to the body, its hemline delineated with precision across the chest and falling in soft, naturalistic folds over the  legs.

The bronze exhibits a rich, dark brown patina with warm cuprite undertones and areas of encrustation, attesting to centuries of veneration in a Lao temple or shrine. The casting is notably refined, with crisp detail in the facial features, robe edges..

Dimensions: 42 cm (16½ in.) high

Condition: Very good overall antique condition. Expected surface wear, minor casting imperfections, and age-appropriate oxidation consistent with an 18th-century ritual object. The figure is solidly cast and stable.

Significance: The Lan Xang Kingdom ("Million Elephants") was one of the great Buddhist realms of Southeast Asia, and its bronze sculptures are prized for their harmonious proportions and deeply spiritual presence. Images of this quality were produced for royal temples and important monastic foundations, embodying the Theravada Buddhist ideals that defined Lao culture. This piece offers a rare opportunity to acquire a fine example of classic Lao Buddhist art from the golden age of the Lan Xang tradition.

Ideal for distinguished collections of Southeast Asian Buddhist sculpture, Lao art, or Theravada devotional bronzes.
