Antique Shan bronze Buddha of the late 19th century, finely cast with elegant proportions and particularly detailed post-casting carving on the robe. The Shan, or Tai Yai, developed a distinctive Buddhist artistic tradition during the 19th century, combining influences from the classical Burmese traditions of Ava, early Konbaung and Mandalay with their own local artistic character. As Burmese political influence over the Shan States weakened, Shan sculpture developed a more individual and folk-like quality, while retaining the essential iconography of Burmese Buddhism.
Shan bronze images are especially renowned for their fine post-casting decoration, with elaborate carving often applied to the robe, throne and fingers. This example is particularly notable for the delicate and precise carving of the robe, giving the surface a rich and highly decorative appearance.
