Standing Bronze Buddha in Abhaya Mudra
Style
Rattanakosin Buddhist art. The Buddha stands in Abhaya Mudra, with both hands raised and palms outward in a gesture of fearlessness, protection and reassurance. The figure displays the elegant formal balance characteristic of Rattanakosin sculpture, with a slender elongated body, subtly flared robe edges and a tall flame-shaped ushnisha. The sanghati is worn in the open mode, leaving the right shoulder bare and falling in crisp, rhythmic folds. The bronze is well cast and of substantial weight for its scale.
Period
19th Century, Rattanakosin Period, Thailand. The Rattanakosin Kingdom was established in 1782 following the fall of Ayutthaya, with the Thai capital relocated to Bangkok. Standing Buddhas of this scale were produced for temple shrines and royal wihans, serving as powerful devotional images.

Cast bronze, well modelled and of good weight, with an aged surface.
