Antique Pala Dynasty Brass Buddha
Style
Pala Buddhist art. The Buddha is seated in full padmasana (lotus position), displaying the Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture symbolising the moment of enlightenment, while the left hand rests in dhyana mudra in meditation. The serene face features downcast eyes and a subtle smile. Tight curls cover the head, rising to a pointed ushnisha, symbol of spiritual attainment. Despite its miniature scale, the sculpture demonstrates the refined modelling and elegant proportions characteristic of Pala metalwork.

12th Century, Pala Dynasty, India. The Pala period was one of the great eras of Buddhist art in eastern India, renowned for its sophisticated bronze and brass sculpture and its influence across the Buddhist world.
Material
Cast brass, with a cleaned metal surface retaining traces of an aged patina. Finely detailed despite its exceptionally small scale.
