Lan Xang, Laos. The Buddha is seated in virāsana in Bhumisparsha Mudra, with the right hand touching the lotus throne and the left resting in dhyana mudra upon the lap. The serene Lao physiognomy features downcast eyes, gently arched brows, a subtle meditative smile, broad oval face and elongated earlobes. Tightly curled hair rises to a tall ushnisha, the finial is missing. The diaphanous sanghati drapes over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder and torso bare, with naturalistic folds falling over the legs.Period
17th Century, Lan Xang Kingdom, Laos. The sculpture reflects the refined artistic tradition of the historic Lao kingdom that flourished along the Mekong River. Its harmonious proportions and serene expression are characteristic of classical Lao Theravada Buddhist sculpture.Material
