Antique Shan Bronze Buddha Statue – Shan States, Myanmar / Burma
A fine late 19th-century Shan bronze Buddha statue from the Shan States of Myanmar (Burma), presented on an impressive high throne. The sculpture measures 24 cm in height and is an elegant example of the distinctive Buddhist sculpture tradition of the Shan peoples.
The Buddha is seated in the bhūmisparśa mudrā, the traditional gesture of enlightenment, with the right hand touching the ground while the left hand rests in the lap. The elevated stepped throne gives the figure a particularly strong vertical presence.
The sculpture displays several characteristic features of Shan Buddhist art, notably the elegant almond-shaped eyes, serene and contemplative expression, and the exceptionally high finial rising above the head. The finely modelled facial features convey the calm, meditative character typical of Shan representations of the Buddha.
A particularly attractive detail is the finely incised decoration of the monastic robe. The carefully articulated folds and borders create a delicate contrast with the otherwise powerful silhouette of the figure and demonstrate the attention to detail of the sculptor.
