China - Temple or Spirit House - Qing Dynasty - Circa 1900
A very beautiful antique Chinese shrine or spirit house made of lacquered cypress wood. It was built in imitation of a real Buddhist temple, even featuring a smaller version of the actual roof. It features magnificent hand-carvings of traditional Chinese folk art, and a mark on the door panels indicates protection. There are three openwork double doors preceded by a canopy supported by colonnades at the front, which can be opened and allow you to pray to the deities.
