<p>Exceptional Antique Bagan Bronze-Bell Metal Buddha</p><p><strong>Early Bagan (Pagan) Empire, Burma (Myanmar), 11th century</strong><br><strong>Reign of King Anawrahta (r. 1044–1077)</strong></p><p>Description</p><p>An exceptionally rare <strong>11th-century metal image of the Buddha from the Bagan (Pagan) Empire</strong>, depicting the Buddha seated in <strong>bhūmisparśa mudrā</strong>, the earth-touching gesture symbolising the moment of his Enlightenment.</p><p>This remarkable sculpture belongs to the formative period of Bagan Buddhist art, when the newly established empire was absorbing and transforming artistic traditions arriving from India and neighbouring regions. The Buddha's refined proportions, serene presence and carefully articulated iconography reveal the strong influence of the <strong>Pāla Buddhist tradition of eastern India</strong>, whose artistic vocabulary played an important role in the development of early Burmese royal art.</p><p>The sculpture is particularly significant because <strong>surviving cast-metal images securely attributable to the early Bagan period are extraordinarily rare</strong>. Bagan is renowned above all for its extraordinary architectural heritage and for its vast corpus of brick, stucco, stone and terracotta Buddhist imagery. The present image preserves the memory of that transitional moment, when Indian Pāla models were being adapted by Burmese craftsmen into a new local artistic language.</p><p>The <strong>bhūmisparśa mudrā</strong>, with the right hand reaching toward the earth and the left hand resting in the lap, is among the most important Buddhist gestures, referring specifically to the Buddha's triumph over Māra and his attainment of Enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya.</p><p>Material</p><p><strong>Copper-based cast alloy, combining the characteristics of brass and bronze</strong>, with copper as the principal constituent and smaller proportions of zinc and tin.</p><p>The composition is particularly interesting from a technical and archaeological perspective. The presence of both zinc and tin places the metal between what would conventionally be described as <strong>brass and bronze</strong>, reflecting the complex copper-alloy technology employed by historical South and Southeast Asian metalworkers.</p><p>The sculpture retains an exceptionally developed ancient surface, with extensive natural mineralisation. Deep <strong>dark-red cuprite formations</strong>, porous areas and localized surface alteration are visible throughout the figure. The intervention was undertaken for structural preservation and does not detract from the overall integrity and exceptional character of the sculpture.</p><p>Significance</p><p>The combination of <strong>early Bagan attribution, exceptional rarity of surviving metal images, Pāla-related iconography, and a remarkably preserved mineralised copper alloy surface</strong> makes this an important and highly collectible example of early Burmese Buddhist art.</p><p>Metal images of the Bagan Empire are far less frequently encountered than the more familiar architectural and terracotta remains of Bagan.
