Very large and very beautiful Butsudan, Edo period
17th-first half of the 19th century

Japan, Lacquered wood
Portable hotel in lacquered wood in the form of a cabinet. The two doors can be closed with a finely crafted gilded lock.The red lintel of the hotel is also finely crafted with floral motifs.
Inside this cabinet, we find a large, beautifully crafted kannon with a mustache, depicted with 1,000 arms. The face is serene; the closed eyelids hide glass eyes. Only two pairs of arms remain
(see photo): the upper arms are in Anjali mudra The lower arms hold an offering
bowl. The statue was formerly part of the collection of Gerard van Hulst: Dutch composer and owner of the Van Oosterwolde Museum ref SG23
