Zhao Gongming tamed a black tiger, which he made his mount, and is armed with a gnarled staff, a magic weapon that is identified with an iron whip. Along with Guangong and Guanyin, he is one of the most often represented deities in Hunan statuary. But few people know his story. His legend is taken from the Ming novel: The Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen yanyi). Despite his consummate art of strategy, our hero was
defeated and put to death. After King Wu's victory, Jiang Ziya appointed him president of the Ministry of Wealth.This former hermit also practiced the Tao during his lifetime; after his death, he is also an expert in medical care and an exorcist. By blowing on the leaves of trees, he changes them into gold. He was also invested by the Jade Emperor with the title of Marshal of the orthodox altar of mysteries and watches over evil spirits in the four corners of the world.
