This interesting Sino-Tibetan tantric book cover from the 17th-18th century, dating to the early Qing Dynasty, is a beautiful example of Buddhist artistry. Carved from wood and adorned with gilt and polychrome, the cover depicts a series of deities, including three Guhyasamaja and four Hayagriva.
The seven tantric figures are meticulously carved within individual arched niches, their dynamic forms and multiple limbs symbolizing their divine power and complex tantric practices. The gilt finish, with traces of red pigment, highlights the intricate details of the figures and the swirling, flame-like aureoles that surround them. The background of each niche features a finely detailed floral motif.
The cover's edges are embellished with a mantra written in Indian Ranja script, while the spine is painted in a striking vermillion. This combination of materials and decorative elements reflects the fusion of Tibetan and Chinese artistic traditions.
