71 - Savitri Pala bronze group Matrikas India 11th centuy
7000-12000 €

This is a rare bronze from the Pala period of India, dating to the 11th century. The sculpture, measuring 17.5cm long and 9.5cm high without its stand, depicts four seated Matrikas (mother goddesses) accompanied by a bearded male guardian figure.
The Matrikas are a group of goddesses who are the personified powers of the great gods. They are often depicted with their divine counterparts. In this piece, the goddesses are seated in a row, each with distinct features and gestures. The bearded male figure, likely a guardian deity, is seated on the far side. The style is characteristic of Pala art, with elegant, refined forms and intricate details despite the small scale.
