147A - Lanxan bronze Buddha with silver eyes 17th c Laos
3000-5000 €

This magnificent 17th-century Lanxang kingdom bronze Buddha statue from Laos depicts the Buddha in the Bhumisparsha mudra, or "earth-touching" gesture. The Buddha is seated in the full lotus position (padmasana) on a tiered, hexagonal base.
The face has a serene, meditative expression with downcast eyes, accented with silver inlay. The lips are full, and a gentle smile is present. The elongated earlobes touch the shoulders, a characteristic mark of the Buddha. The hair is rendered in tight, spiral curls, culminating in a flaming finial (ushnisha) at the top of the head.
The robe is draped in a stylized manner over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder bare. The body has a graceful, slender form. The right hand rests on the knee with the fingertips touching the earth, symbolizing the Buddha calling the earth to witness his enlightenment. The left hand rests in his lap, palm facing upward, in the dhyana mudra of meditation.
The statue has a rich, dark patina, indicative of its age, and measures 49 cm in height with a lap width of 8 inches. This piece is a fine example of Lanxang artistic tradition, combining elegant form with profound symbolism.
