67 - Jain brass figure, India 9-10th century

This is a rare Jain brass figure from India, dating to the 9th-10th century. The sculpture, which stands at 11.5cm high, depicts a Jina seated in a meditative posture, likely the lotus position (padmasana), on a throne-like platform. The Jina's serene face, with a slight smile and downcast eyes, reflects a state of spiritual tranquility.
The Jina is positioned on an elaborate, openwork throne, supported by two small figures at the front. The throne's back is a prabhamandala (halo), intricately carved with symbolic motifs. Flanking the central Jina are a standing attendant (one missing), who are likely yaksha and yakshi, celestial beings who serve as guardians and attendants to the Tirthankaras. The figure to the right holds a fly-whisk, a symbol of royalty and respect.
The entire piece has a dark patina with traces of a lighter, possibly brassy, tone, suggesting its age and the care it has received over centuries. Its small size, combined with the detailed craftsmanship, makes it a remarkable example of early medieval Jain metalwork.
