Art auction sale, June 12, 2018, lot 6 Greco-Buddhist Art Stucco 06/12/2018, appraised on this occasion by the Portier and Alice Jossaume firm.
Stucco head sketching a slight smile, half-closed eyes topped with arched eyebrows and a very beautiful curly hairstyle.The iconography of this rare piece: The slightly tilted bun on the left side of the piece is exceptional. A very beautiful piece that exudes a great deal of serenity.
The piece comes from a Belgian collection acquired by M.D. on April 23, 1975
In Gandhara art, Afghanistan (Hadda) specializes in the production of stucco.
It is quite rare to find Gandhara stucco pieces that still display some of their polychromy.
We also note the presence of gold pigment in the hairstyle. I was indeed able to detect gilding in the form of gold "nuggets" under the microscope (see photo of my microscopic analysis of the piece).
