60 - Ganesha Pala black stone - 11thc - Bangladesh

This exceptional black stone sculpture from the 11th century depicts the Hindu deity Ganesha in an exuberant dance pose. It is a product of the Pala dynasty in Bengaladesh. The detailed carving showcases Ganesha standing on the back of his rat vehicle, with one leg raised and his shoulders tilted, embodying a dynamic sense of movement.
Two celestial musicians, one with cymbals and the other with drums, are at his feet, providing a rhythmic accompaniment to his dance. The sculpture adheres to Pala artistic conventions, with Ganesha standing on a double lotus that emerges from swirling foliage. Below Ganesha, a pair of small donor figures are depicted in the anjali mudra, a gesture of veneration, demonstrating their devotion.
It highlights the symbolism of the dance as an echo of his father Shiva's dance of creation and destruction, signifying the renewal of the universe and the destruction of corruption. The statue is a testament to the high level of artistry achieved during the Pala period and has a rich provenance, having been part of an old Polish collector's property. The sculpture measures 70cm high without its stand.
