16A - Buddhist Temple - China - Qing Dynasty - 19th

Buddhist Temple - China - Qing Dynasty - 19th
Rare wooden Buddha in his temple, probably elm. The richly decorated temple is fixed on a wooden stele. On either side of the opening, two dragons fly and protect the representation of the earth. The roof is pagoda-shaped and topped by a lotus-flowered stupa. They may notice remnants of red and green polychromies, as well as gilding. The Buddha sits there in meditation position in front of his Mandorle, hands in Namaste Mudra. They see remnants of polychromy and gold leaf gilding. Here we find a beautiful work of popular style, but undoubtedly of very good taste. The shape of the roof is typical of those of Mongolian temples. Tibetan Buddhism remains the religion of 90% of Mongolians. Kublai Khan, who was more versed in Chan Buddhism in his youth, was influenced by the Lama Phagpa of the Sakya school whom he appointed as imperial tax collector, and this became Kublai's personal faith. He built the Zhenjue temple in his capital, Khanbalik (now Beijing) in a good state of preservation, except for restorations on some corners of the roof.
Good general condition - Restorations at the corners of the roof - China - Qing Dynasty - 19th.
