This exceptional antique Sukhothai Walking Buddha, cast in bronze and dating to the 14th–15th century, is a fine example of one of the most celebrated forms of Thai Buddhist sculpture. The Sukhothai walking Buddha, or Phra Leela, is renowned for its elegant proportions, fluid movement and extraordinary sense of spiritual grace. This example combines refined Sukhothai modelling with an exceptionally well-developed antique bronze surface and documented provenance from a USA collection.
 
The Walking Buddha is one of the most celebrated forms of Thai Buddhist art. Unlike the more static seated Buddha, the Sukhothai Walking Buddha conveys a remarkable sense of grace and spiritual movement. This sculpture captures that ideal beautifully, with the Buddha shown taking a measured step forward, one arm hanging naturally at his side while the other is raised in a gesture of serene composure.
 
The elongated proportions, gently curved body, slender waist, broad shoulders and graceful limbs are hallmarks of the Sukhothai style. The serene oval face features softly arched eyebrows, downcast meditative eyes, a finely shaped nose and delicately modelled lips. Elongated earlobes, tightly arranged snail-shell curls and the characteristic flame-shaped ketumālā further reinforce the sculpture's Sukhothai identity.
The robe is treated with remarkable restraint. Fine, flowing lines follow the body without obscuring the underlying anatomy, creating the sense of a light garment moving naturally with the figure. This sophisticated treatment is one of the defining characteristics of the finest Sukhothai period Buddha statues.
 
This sculpture has undergone detailed stylistic and material examination. The analysis considered the modelling, proportions, iconography and casting characteristics together with the physical condition of the bronze.
Microscopic examination revealed a heterogeneous aged surface with areas of corrosion, mineralisation, surviving traces of older organic coatings and localized later cleaning. An old structural fissure on the reverse also contains accumulated deposits and corrosion products.
These observations are considered together rather than relying on patina alone. The convergence of stylistic, technical and material evidence supports the attribution of the sculpture to the antique Sukhothai period.
