U-Thong C Bronze Buddha

A graceful Thai bronze Buddha image of the U Thong C type, dating to the late 14th to 15th century.
The U Thong tradition represents an important stage in the development of early Thai Buddhist sculpture. U Thong images are generally associated with the central Thai region around Ayutthaya and preserve strong connections with earlier artistic traditions as the Lopburi/Khmer art, while gradually developing the distinctive characteristics that would become hallmarks of Ayutthayan sculpture.
The C type is particularly elegant, reflecting a growing Sukhothai influence in its modelling. This influence can be seen in the softer treatment of the features, the refined contours of the body and the more graceful, slender silhouette. Compared with earlier U Thong forms, Type C Buddhas often possess a noticeably more feminine aspect with an oval face, combining the robust presence of U Thong sculpture with the idealised elegance of the Sukhothai tradition.
This example has a particularly appealing sense of balance and serenity, with the refined modelling characteristic of this transitional period.

Condition: Very good overall condition. No repairs. A small casting imperfection is present on the right arm, consistent with the original casting process.
